Yokohama Trials

Unlike the major International Military Tribunal for the Far East located in Tokyo, the Yokohama trials operated under United States legal authority and addressed war crimes committed against American prisoners-of-war by lower-ranking military personnel and civilians. These Class B and C trials focused on conventional war crimes and crimes against humanity, such as the abuse and unlawful execution of POWs. The extensive cases centered around incidents that occurred in Fukuoka at the Western Army Headquarters and nearby Kyushu Imperial University.

  • USA v. Masaji Nagaoka

    Defendants were accused of the beating death of Lt. Col. William Morse in the Fukuoka POW camp and subsequent attempts at concealment.

  • USA v. Norifumi Otosu

    This case centered on denying POWs adequate food, shelter, and medical care at Fukuoka Camp #3 in violation of international law regarding prisoner treatment.
