SENBA, Yoshitaka  [Marginal Note: (KIU) ]

Incarcerated in Sugamo 20 July.

Statement of Senba (399). Senba, a 25 year old surgeon, of the Ishiyama Surgery Dept of Kyushu University since 1943, did experimental work on blood substitutes with Torisu, Taro, Kubo and Toshiyuki. On four occasions he aided Ishiyama in operations.

Senba participated in a chest operation with Ishiyama on a POW. Torisu told Senba that the purpose of this operation was toe stop the flow of blood from a wound in the chest. The accused saw the wound but did not examine it. This POW had been carried in by two or three soldiers, was sleeping on a stretcher; this operation took place in Hirako's autopsy experimental room. Hirao told Senba of the operation the day before it took place.

Ishiyama was assisted by Mori, Hirao, Torisu and Tsutsui. l There were also present two or three Army officers and Komori and Hirako, observers.

Mori gave the either a̶n̶d̶ an incision was made on the right side of the chest, and three ribs were cut. Torisu and Hirao held the incision open. In this lung operation, the flow of blood of the pulmonary artery could not be stopped. Hirao applied artificial respiration for thirty minutes. Senba gave 200 ccs injection of sea water extract to keep blood pressure constant. They  attempted to remove the lung, but the patient was too weak. Mori helped put the patient on the operating table, and Komori watched. Torisu assisted in keeping the wound open and stopped the blood. Hirao helped wipe the blood and applied artificial respiration. Tsutsui passed over the operating equipment. Senba gave sea water extract. The patient*was dead when the incision was sewed up. Ishiyama said the death was due to the loss of blood.

The accused "heard" that other operations were performed on POWs, but he did not participate. On the day In question there were two operations. The second POW was brought in at the finish of the first operation and the first POW was left on the table tint the conclusion of the second operation. The second operation was i cranialtomy. Torisu told Senba it was to be a brain operation; that they would open up the back of the head of the patient since the patient was subject to epilepsy. However, the second POW appeared normal. Ishiyama conducted the operation, and Torisu and Hirao assisted. Tsutsul passed the equipment, and Komori, Hirako and two or three soldiers, Including Col. Sato, watched. Morimoto was also there.

Ishiyama drilled four holes in the exposed bone. Torisu made an opening exposing the brain. Hirako went out and got a preserved brain for Ishiyama, but the operation was then discontinued because of the fact that too much blood was lost.and the POW's head was resewn.

No Injection was given. The POW was alive and he was taken away by four soldiers. Ishiyama stated that Bovid electro surgical unity should have been used to prevent bleeding. In this operation Hirao wiped the blood and kept the wound open. Torisu told Senba, some two weeks later, that in an operation of a third POW the gall bladder was removed.

Senba participated in the first two operations on the 15 or 16 of May and on the next two operations on 23 May. On the 23rd of May the stomach and liver operations were conducted simultaneously* In the stomach operation Mori, Hirao and Nurse Miki participated. In the liver operation Ishiyama, Komori, Nurse Tsutsui, Hirako, Senba and evidently Torisu and Morimoto participated. There were two or three Army officers who observed both operations. These took place in the autopsy room. The POWs walked in and appeared drugged. Mori stated that they were drugged.

In the stomach operation, Mori stated he made the incision. Hirao exposed the stomach and the stomach was cut in half and half taken out. The remaining or attached half was sewed to the small intestine. Miki passed the equipment. Morimoto might have been there. Senba made an injection of 200 ccs of sea water extract. There was nothing wrong with the stomach, this being an experimental operation. Senba doesn't know whether the patient lived or died.

In the liver operation an Incision was made Into the liver, but the POW bled too much and died. Komori and Ishiyama performed the operation. Senba believes that Torisu assisted. Artificial respiration was used, but no injection was given. Someone said that the patient had a swollen liver, but Senba saw nothing wrong with It.

In the neck operation the objective was to take a carotic body out of the neck to help circulation of the blood through the extremities but there was nothing wrong with the patient's hands or feet. Hirao made an Incision into the side of the neck? Senba held It open. Miki passed the instruments, Hirao removed the carotic body and "injection” was made. Senba injected 200 ccs of sea water extract. At that time the patient was alive.

On the other table a brain operation was performed, by Ishiyama, and Senba believes Torisu, Nurse Tsutsui assisted and Hirako watched. The brain was exposed, and Senba heard that the patient died.

In the gall bladder operation the participants were Ishiyama, Komori, nurse Mikl and perhaps Torisu. There were two or three Army officers, Hirako, Hirao and Senba watching. Sato was one of the Army officers. Ishiyama stated that the patient had a stone in the bladder. An incision was made and the bladder removed ~ at that time the patient was alive, but Hirao and Torisu said that the patient did die.
