At 1300, 20 May, Sato came to Yakumaru and said that ther was to be operation on Prisoners at KIU, that he had arranged for transportation, requested (not ordered) Yakumaru to join him. Yakumaru said "Alright,"let immediately. Sato said that "Today’s operations to be performed on the Prisoners are going to be a new method of operations." Yakumaru could have refused to go, he went because the operations would be spectacular.

In the Autopsy Room when'the first Prisoner was brought in were: Ishiyama, Komori,Sato,Yakumaru,Seriba,Torisu,Mori,Hirao,Hirako and a few oehter.

While the operation was being performed on the first Prisoner, Yakumaru noticed Mori and Hirao standing by the second Prisoner. Someone said that it had been a stomach operation on the second Prisoner but the operation performed by Mori and Hirao had been completed. However there was a second operation on the second Prisoner.

Statement of Hirao (25 Aug-Sept 47). In 1945, at Ishiyama Surgical Clinic were Torisu, Mori,Nishimura (who left in early May 45), Morimoto, who arrived from the front in early May 45, Nagawa,Tashiro,Kin,Sha,Kubo. The above doctors treated patients.

On about 25 May, after the third series of operations, there was a party held in the evening of those who had taken part. Komori there told Hirao, Torisu, and Mori, perhaps Sato, that the crew members operated on had participated in indiscriminate bombing, that some of them had bombed the Imperial Palace.

On 17 May 1945, a Thursday 14-00 clinical lecture class was called off so that ^ the operations could be held. Hirao was told about noon by Ishiyama that there would be some operations conducted on captured B29 crew members at the Autopsy Section, that he should prepare for them and to inform Kubo,Mori,Seriba,Nogawa and Tashiro, that Nogawa and Tashiro should prepare the heavier instruments.

Hirao went to the Autopsy Section Classroom where the operations were to be held, with Mori and Rorxsu and perhaps Nogawa and Tashiro. Hirao helped connect the lamp, and then Torisu, Mori and Hirao went out behind the Autopsy Sec. to await the arrival of the Prisoners.

Komori said he had given anesthetic injection to the flyers just before leaving but it didn’t seen to have effect on them. Ishiyama then told Mori to give the flyers more injections, the usual injection.

Ishiyama stood to the right of the flyer’s chest, Miki handed him instruments, was Komori, Hirao to his left, Mori to Hirao’s left, Torisu on the left of Ishiyama, Seriba, Tashiro and Nogawa near the prisoner’s head, one of them taking his pulse. Sato was a little behind Torisu. Tsutsui stood near the instrument table, supervised Miki, Kubo was also in tie room.

Statement of Hirao cont'd ..... A second dissecting table was placed where the first had been, wiped, and 2 soldiers brought in the second Prisoner on a stretcher. He was unconscious, his hands were untied and shirt removed, was placed on the table, his ight side sterilized, was net wounded. An operating sheet was placed over him. Ishiyama had already told them to prepare the flyer for a lung operation and Hirao and and Mori, Hirao thinks, tended to those preparations, assisted by Miki.

Hirao believes Mori left the room at the time of the second operation.

About 22 May, shortly after 1300 Ishiyama called Hirao, said "Today right away, we are going to perform some more"operations on Prisoners, so prepare for them. Tell the same persons that you told before, there may be two or three Prisoners." Hirao Informed Mori and Mori and Hirao said that they wished that that type of operation be not conducted. Hirao "then told Torisu, who also agreed that he wished this sort of operation would not be performed.. Hirao and Torisu then; went to see Ishiyama, expressed opinion, Ishiyama saying "I am Doing these things by order of the Army, so they-are no concern of yours. It is your duty to abide by the orders you receive. I have told you frequently that I forbid you to disagree with my actions."

Hirao then told Mori and he believes, Seriba what Ishiyama had said, passed on the orders to others, and tye proceeded to the Autopsy section about 1400, prepared the Autopsy Training Room,

Mori, Seriba, Kubo and perhaps Tashiro arid Nogawa and Hirao went behind the Section to await the Prisoners. Before they arrived Mori and Hirao went in the Training Room, scrubbed, heard Prisoners arrive in truck. Ishiyama was now In the room. 2 Prisoners blindfolded, hands tied in front, half conscious were half carried into the room by Japanese soldiers with their hands around the Prisoners waists. The Prisoners were placed on the dissecting tables after being placed on a stretcher, their clothes removed. Ishiyama scrubbed, told Lori to prepare to r.erform a stomach operation on the Prisoner in the right side of the room, Hirao to assist. Komori then gave a little ether to Mori’s Prisoner, then washed his hand.

Mori, with Hirao assisting, and be thinks Suyama acting as nurse, made an incision from the base of the breast bone to the navel-, retracted the incision, and Mori began cutting the fatty tissue connecting the lower part of the stomach to the large intestine. Komori then took Mori’s place and Hirao became Komori's assistant. Mori the second assistant.

While Ishiyama was working with the heart, Hirako came into the room, looked on for about 4 or 5 minutes, and just as he left, Torisu entered and was bold by Ishiyama to scrub. Ishiyama and Komori then went to the other Prisoner and Mori with Hirao assisting, practiced making the incision in the heart and stitching it up. Mori took about stitches to sew up the incision. The heart stooped when Mori was making the stitches.

Mori and Hirao then replaced the ribs, stitched up the incision in the skin. Hirao doesn’t think the incision in the abdomen was sewed up. Mori and Hirao

Statement of Hirao cont'd .... Mori and Hirao then took the stomach which had been retracted, and cut it open, examining the inside; there was nothing in the stomach, there were symptoms of slight gastritis.

Mori then went to watch the other operation, Hirao left the room for the latrine, returned one minute later to the operation "here the left side of the liver had been removed from the Prisoner and placed on the instrument table in an emesis basin.

While Hirao, Komori and Mori were working on the other Prisoner’s stomach Hirao heard someone from the other table state that the Prisoner would likely die from an over dose of anesthetic.

The slight gastritis of the stomach of the first operation was no reason to operate on the stomach. Perhaps it was profitable for Mori and Hirao to see Komori perform the resection by the Miyagi system.

On 25 May, Hirao attended -the third series. After lunch Ishiyama told Hirao that a brain operation was to be performed on one Prisoner, that he was to assemble the operation Instruments in the nurses changing room, to tell the others. At 1330 Hirao went to.the Autopsy Training Room, where Mori Tashiro KuboSeriba and Hirao prepared a dissecting table.

On about 28 or 29 May, Mori left the University to accept a position as Professor at Kagoshima Medical College, and Morimoto took his place.

Mori and Senba asked Hirao to go to him, returned in about 15 minutes told Mori and Senba that. Torisu with Ishiyama in his office, Torisu asked him to stop, but he refused.

Komori said he' wanted to perform a stomach operation on the first Prisoner Ishiyama said he wanted to perform a liver operation on the second. Ishiyama, Komori,Mori and Hirao scrubbed, Nogawa administeed ether to the second Prisoner.

An incision had been made from the Prisoner's sternum to the umbilical cord, a sheet placed over him and someone had administered ether, Komori was cutting the membrane and blood vessels; Hirao was retracting the incision; Komori was tying the artery that led to the stomach, but, reptured the artery by pulling too hard on It. Komori and Mori tried to stop the bleeding by using forceps, but were unsuccesful. Then Ishiyama who was watching the operation, said he would take over.

Mori was present, tied off the blood vessels, held the stomach while it was resected.

About a week after Ishiyama first'called, semeone on Hirako's staff came to him and told him that the professor from surgery was in the Anatomy Dissection Room performing an operation. Torisu went to the Autopsy Room, saw 2 Prisoners lying on 2 dissecting tables arranged as at the first operation. Mori had been operating on one Prisoner, with Hirao as his assistant. Mori at that time was suturing the incision and the operation had been completed. Torisu believes the Prisoner was dead. Mori operated on the Frisoner to gain experience on how to operate on the heart and stomach. Mori was being transferred to another hospital in South Kyushu to become a Surgeon. This Prisoner did not necessitate a heart or stomach operation.

Statemet of Torisu cont'd. ... The operation was not of value toward medical science advancement, because that type of operation was already known. It is a very wrong thing to conduct experiements on healthy humans. Torisu then returned to'his office, leaving Hirao, Ishiyama, Mori, Seriba, Tsutsui, Miki, and Suyama or Manabe in the Autopsy Room.

2 or 3 days later Ishiyama ordered Torisu to assist again.
