MATAKE, SHICHIRO  [Marginal Note: (KIU) ]

40, a doctor, entered army in 1937, made first Lt. discharge in 20 February 1945, transferred to the Officers Club Hospital as a civilian attached to the army, served as temporary head. While there his promotion to captain was granted, requested before discharge. On 6 May Matake was transferred to Oita Army Hospital and drafted in army as captain, stayed there until October 1945, when discharged.

Matake first heard of operations on PWs in October 1945 when he went back to the Officers Club Hospital to move hospital equipment. Komori was a good business acquaintance; if the operation took place while Matake was there he would have heard about it. Major Hishiyama of'the Medical Section took Matake’s place at Officers Club Hospital.

Staff of Officers Club Hospital:

Fujiko Shiokawa - head nurse

(fnu) Tanaka - internal disease nurse

(fnu) Takahashi - dental nurse (deceased)

Kyoko Ooba - surgical nurse.

Chizuko Nakae - surgical nurse

Reiko Takechi - surgical nurse

Junjiro Shinno - pharmacist

(fnu) Ito - dentist

(fnu) Sasaki - dentist

2nd Lt. (fnu) Kanehisa - doctor of internal disease

PO Momoda - pharmacist

G-enso Miyamoto - Chief of General Affairs

Shiraku Komori - Chief Surgical Doctor

Tozo Maekawa, formerly of WA Medical Section told Matake that PWs were operated on at KIU, that the matter was then being investigated by the occupation forces, and they might all be called in for questioning. In Matake's opinion, the operations must have taken place between 5 May 1945 (the day Matake trans-verred) and 9 July 1945 (the day Komori died). Ilatake also heard rumors that Komori was the one who introduced the PWs to the University.
