Statement of Sato (420 - 25 Sept 1947).

In early May, Sato went to Komori, who was Assistant Medical Officer in charge of Western Army dispensary, for calcium injection. Sato mentioned fliers would be executed without delay. Komori said he would like the fliers for experimental purposes and that it would not be inhumane. Sato told him to get an opinion from Horiuchi, Yokoyama and Inada.

About 20 May Komori came to Sato's office to give him an injection and at that time remarked that the prisoners were weak and their morale low and that he wanted to give them sea water to regain their health. He further remarked that such sea water was still in an experimental stage at KIU and that he wanted to use the prisoners for experimental purposes; said "they" would get an opinion from higher officers (medical (?)).

Komori also stated that some prisoners had been injured and had not received proper medical attention and upon Sato's request agreed to give them attention. Sato and Komori then visited the detention barracks.

Two or three days later Komori told Sato that he had received Yokoyama's permission to take the prisoners to KIU for experimental operations, and he asked that the prisoners be released to him. Yokoyama then told Sato he should warn Komori about secrecy, which he did. On that day or the next Aihara discussed with Komori the number of prisoners to be taken. This was done secretly.

On 22, 23 or 24 May, in the morning, Komori, in a low voice, told Sato that they would take the prisoners to KIU that afternoon.

Between 1300 and 1400 Sato and Komori went to the detention barracks where there were two prisoners blindfolded who were put in the rear of the truck. Komori and Sato sat in the front of the cab with the driver. At this time the guards were warned of the secrecy aspect. Komori said the prisoners would be operated on the to determine the effectiveness of the sea water solution. They then went to the autopsy room of KIU. After about two hours of operation time had elapsed Komori told Sato they removed a lung but it would be useless to hospitalize the prisoner. At that time he said the other prisoner was under ether in the other room. About a week later there was a second operation with Ishiyama in charge assisted by Komori and others. [illegible marginal note]

On the same day, there was a second operation on the second prisoner and, while Ishiyama was in charge of this operation in which one-half of lung was removed, Komori did most of the work.

Komori told Sato that removing the stomach was very difficult because of the heavy loss of blood and further/appointed out that removing one-half lung was much more difficult than removing an entire lung. [illegible marginal note]

The third series of operations took place about 5, 6 or 7 June. On the day prior Komori contacted Sato. On the morning of the operation Komori came to Sato's office, checked another name in the book , went with Sato to the detention barracks and rode with a prisoner to KIU. Komori said it was to be a brain operation.

Komori told Sato of the fourth operation when he came to give Sato another injection. Komori told him that there had been two more operations, the fourth and fifth, and that they were now through with the experiments. At this time he told Sato specifically that the operations had been experimental.
