KAMADA, MASAFUSA

Statement of Kamada (23 July 1947) [Marginal Note: CONFINED SUGAMO 29 Aug 47 ]

33, was inducted in army in 1939, received physical discharge same year, reinducted 4 April 1945 and assigned to Kumomoto Army Hospital, where he trained to become a medical Officer, at that time a medical seargant. 14 April 1945 discharged on completion of training. 30 April 1945 inducted into Fukuoka. 2nd Rinji Army Hospital as P.O. 25 May 1945 was transferred to WAH, Adjutant Staff Medical Office, remained there until demobilized on 24 September 1945.

Duty at WAH: to treat EM of that organization. Since the dispensary didn't have sufficient supplies, Kamada tried to obtain more. He was supposed to check the EM once a month, but this was never done. He had one superior private assigned to do the work around the dispensary.

Kamada lived in same barracks as Komori. Kamada had one room at the Kaikosha Hospital for his work, was billeted there between 25 May 1945 and 19 June 1945, ate there. 1st Lt. Miyamoto was acting director of the hospital after the director was drafted in the army, which was before Kamada got there. His name was Matake— went to Oita and became a director of an army hospital there.

About one week after Kamada was assigned to work at the hospital, around 28 May, there was a special lunch for Matake, who visited the hospital at that time. Those attending: Miyamoto, Shinno, Kishi, Kanehisa, Komori, Matake, Ito, Sakai, Kamada. Oda might have been there; Kamada believes that Shiokawa served them. Kamada believes Tsurumaru came in late; does remember having a drink with him.

Believes that they ate fish; Kamada ate everything that was served, is quite evasive about human liver— states that he did not know about human liver, if he had known it was human liver he would not have eaten it.

Kamada recalls having a conversation with Kishi, who sat next to Kamada, when they sat down to eat, and Kishi passed Kamada a platter of something— he doesn't remember what. Kamada came in, he believes, with Sakai, was present during the entire meal. Kamada believes Kishi said, "Won't you try some of this?" Kamada took of this food.

If human liver were served at this time, he ate it, but doesn't remember it. Kamada cannot say that he did not know it was human liver; he can only say that he had no recollection of eating it.

At this meal, Matake said that at his new station in Oita-ken, he had to send EM to catch fish so that they would have enough to eat. He also heard Matake say to Komori, "Where have you been? I have wanted to talk.” Komori had just entered the room. Matake also asked Komori how that new weapon was coming along and Komori said that it would be ready for use by next summer.

Matake stayed at Kaikosha Hospital just that day; he believes that he stayed until about evening.

Kamada states, "If it was human liver, then I ate it, but I don*t remember, what it was."
