Memo written by Jinnaka, 11 June 1947.

Jinnaka called in dean of medical faculty, director of attached hospital and leaders of the first branch and the anatomy room on 11 June, to explain that they must cooperate to find facts and records of KIU case. Thus, there has been no results as yet as to this matter.

Information possessed by Jinnaka:

1. Nakashima. Yoshisada. Director of attached Hospital of Medical Facility, KIU from 1944 to 1946. He was particularly perturbed as to how to help the hospital from an air raid. Hirao (now in Sugamo) is the husband of Nakashima's daughter. Despite this, Nakashima states that Hirao never told him about it, until after the war;, and he (Jinnaka) thinks that Nakashima then asked Hirao to resign. In the spring of 1946 Nakashima received an anonymous letter that if the latrines were not cleaned at the Hospital, the writer would inform the Occupation of the Allied PW operations, according to information Jinnaka received from Mrs. Nakashima. Similar letters were sent to the dean and the newspaper after tie war. Nakashima thought that it was done by the Communist group on the faculty. After the newspaper disclosed the operations someone left a letter on Nakashima's desk which stated: "The letter about the PW operation ease was written by our group. But now I am outside the group. I must apologize that we troubled Mr. Nakashima so much by the nameless letters."

2. The relations between the movement of reformation of the Medical College and Mr. Ishiyama:

A reformation committee under KIU President Okuda was set up after the war to inculcate democracy. Many professors of militaristic and super-nationalistic color were forced to resign. A separate committee was set up for "each faculty." Such a medical faculty committee was set up, including students, with the first step to make reformation of professors themselves.

(Ed.: Jinnaka is worried as to SCAP's attitude toward the University itself)

There was to be a public vote of confidence of Medics and students, in June 1946, wherein if a professor received less than a 60% vote, he was again considered as to dropping him. Most professors got a 90% vote., Ishiyama 70%. Jinnaka had previously suggested that Ishiyama resign. Professor Ohtsubo, professor of hygienics, was advised to retire from school, adjudged incompetent by the vote. The voters were advised previously that Ishiyama was the responsibl man as to the PW incident.

3. Jinnaka's imagination as to what sort of operation was performed. Ishiyama was interested in lung operations, but at the end of the war he was interested in the surgical application of sea water, epilepsy operation, and chololithiasis operation. So he assumes that the experiments were of this sort.

4. Various rumors:

1. Somone in Ishiyama's house extorted money from him.

b. PWs were carried by army track to anatomy lecture room.

c. Anaesthetic was injected into the PWs, they being told it was a typhoid vaccine.

d. PWs were forced to go to the scene on foot, their eyes bandaged. No one saw them come back.

e. The dead bodies of the PWs were too big to put into boxes; some people saw their bodies on the dissection rack.

f. Komori was drying something like human liver, after cutting it, at the Kaikosha Hospital. He was probably intending to make some new medicine. (Jinnaka heard this rumor from Kanehisa)
