Statement of Jinnaka (16 July 1947)

Jinnaka has been Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at KIU since 1926. The Orthopedic Surgery is primarily used for operations on the bones; they do not have adequate instruments for general surgery; however, instruments from other surgeries could be used and surgeons, could use the operating rooms of the orthopedic surgery.

As chief of Orthopedic Surgery, Jinnaka is responsible for all records kept of all operations performed on patients at the Orthopedic Surgery. His records reveal no entry of Caucasians or PWs having been operated on or treated during April, May or June 1945. However there were no rules prohibiting Caucasians or PWs being treated there.

On 15 September 1943, 5 PWs then being repatriated were injured in an accident occurring near KIU, were treated at Orthopedic Surgery. There are records of this accident at the University Central Administrative Office.

If the 1st and 2nd Surgery operating rooms had an overload of operations to perform in April, May and June 1943, the doctors of other surgeries could have used the Orthopedic operating room. The average number of operations is 25 per month at Orthopedic Surgery; there were 25 in April, 30 in May, 15 in June. During these months they could have offered its facilities to other surgeons to perform on 1-2-3 persons, due to the shortage of surgeons, but emergency cases can always be treated at any time.

The Orthopedic Surgery schedule of operations are on Tues, Thurs, and Sat. mornings. The operating rooms are available at all other times.
