Statement of Sato (8 Oct 47). Komori told Sato he had permission from Horiuchi to use the Prisoners for. experimental operations. Between 10 and 20 May, Komori asked Sato for permission to take weak and -minded Prisoners to KIU for medical treatment. Sato told him he would have to have permission of Horiuchi and Yokoyama, 4 or 5 days later, Komori told Sato he had permission. S to then checked with Yokoyama, who said he had given permission for the Prisoner's to be treated at the University. While Komori was a doctor at Kaikosha Hospital, he was under the Chief of Medical Section (Horiuchi).

At the second series of operations, there was an unknown Officer from Medical Section (aside from Komori) present. After the first operation, Sato asked Komori "isn’t anyone else going to come here from the Medical Section?" Komori replied "the Medical Section doesn't have the nerve to attend." He then said "I will mention this to the Medical Section and get a representative from that Section at the next operation." Sato believes this person was a 1st Lt Kedical Officer, or Capt. He stood in the area near the foot of the operating table, moved around quite a bit. He was about 5'5", rather heavy set, about 140 or 150, restless, had a peculiar manner of holding his head with chin high, rather large with wide, long face, between 35 and 40, no glasses. Yakumaru was also present. The Medical Officer could not-be confused with" Aihara, stayed about 5 min. At Sugamo, TIirao mentioned that an unknown Medical Officer was there as well as Yakumaru (he knew Komori).

Yakumaru and Sato left the -second series together, talked about how horrible it was to watch, left just before" it was over.

Statement of Sato (9 Dec 47). The adjutant Section (Jin and Kusumoto) was responsible for seeing that airmen received medical treatment. The Adjutant .Section Officer secured an Army doctor reserved for such purpose. If hospitalization needed, Sato thinks the Adjutant Section would contact the Medical Section, which would Preferably contact the second A Hospital at Fukuoka as to room, -whereupon the Chief of Medical Section (Horiuchi) would order the hospital to take the flyer. If no room, Sato supposes the Medical Section would request that the civilian hospital handle the flyer, probably thru the Chief of Medical Section (Horiuchi) and Chief of the civilian hospital.

If the Army doctor from the Medical Section treating the flyers, decided that a flyer had to be hospitalized, he would make arrangements thru the Medical Section with the Army hospital, report it to the Adjutant Section (Jin: Kusumoto) who would affect the relase for hospitalisation, the flyers being accompanied by a member of the Adjutant or Medical Section.

As to the flyers being taken to the University, the Adjutant Section received authority from Sato after he got authorization from Horiuchi and Yokoyama. Sato presumes Capt, Aihara authorized Capt. Goiyama of the Adjutant Section to release the flyers by Sato's order. Goiyama would have gone to Jin to receive orders to release. A report to this effect would go to Jin, Yokoyama, Inada and the Senior Staff Officer (Akita). Goiyama would then report the fact of hospitalization to Sato.

Statement of Sato contd. . . . Army doctors were assigned to some Army hospitals, then in turn to Kaikosha Hospital, since the Medical Section could not assign its members, to Kaikosha. This was true of Komori, who was assigned to Kokura Army Hospital, but actually, under authorization of Medical Section and could be ordered directly by Horiuchi.

Aihara saw 2 series of operations. Sato thinks the second and third, Yakumaru saw only the second series, Sato saw three. No one of the Staff Section saw the 4th, unless perhaps Aihara, Yakiimaru and Aihara, were fitnesses at Sato’s invitation. Sato doesn't recall whether a Medical Section representative was at the last two series, but there should have been. Sato has never talked directly, to Horiuchi about anything.
