Statement of Sasaki (21 July 1947)

25, dentist, P.O. in army at Kaikosha Hospital from about 5 February 1945 to end of April, then to Kokura Army hospital. On going to Kokura Hospital, he was immediately transferred to Kumamoto for about 2 weeks. Then he went to Miyakonojo, arriving on 21 May 1945. Promoted to 2nd Lt. at end of war. Never returned for a visit except on 3 May 1945 when he was transferred to Kumamoto, at a time when Matake was head of the hospital. He [Note: Matake] became a captain at the end of April 1945, and Sasaki believes he was called to active duty at that time. Sasaki stayed at hospital 2 days, and Matake left with him and they rode train together as far as Tosu— Matake was going to Oita-ken to take charge of an army hospital.

Sasaki then stopped at Kaikosha Hospital on way back to Kokura 19 May 1945 for about one hour, had lunch between 1400-1500, ate alone, had own lunch with him.

It was before S̶a̶s̶a̶k̶i̶ [Not: Matake] for active duty that there was a special lunch for him, the time that Sasaki rode with him to Tosu. This was just before 5 May. Sasaki did not again visit Kaikosha Hospital until the end of the war.

Sasaki states he never ate human liver at any time.

Statement of Oda (16 July 1947) Oda was present at a dinner in the Kaikosha Hospital dining room when human liver was served, and Oda ate some. PO Komori said that it was human liver before everyone started to eat, that it was the liver of a PW.

At the human liver dinner: Oda, Komori, Kanehisa, Shinno, Shiokawa, Miyamoto. Sasaki, Momota, Matake, Ito, and a sgt. maj. whose name Oda doesn't recall. All of these persons ate human liver.

Statement of Oda (17 July 1947) About 3 June 1945, Shiokawa (Ogawa) notified Oda to attend a dinner which was to be held at the Kaikosha Hospital mess hall, to which Oda went at 1200 that day. When Oda arrived there were present: Ito, Shinno, Komori, Matake, Miyamoto, Sasaki, Momota, Shiokawa, and an unknown sgt. maj. (in this statement he does not mention Kanehisa). At a table in the room 2 plates were placed before each person, one for rice and one for vegetables. There was sake and a plate containing human liver. A toast was made by Matake in honor of a PO, Sasaki, who had been promoted to 2nd Lt.

Statement of Ogawa (Shiokawa) (16-18 July 1947)

Ogawa recollects that there was a special lunch in late May or early June when either Miyamoto, or Matake came back from the army for a visit. Ogawa helped serve at that lunch. Presents Komori, Kanehisa, Kishi, Ito, Shinno, Oda, Sasaki and Ogawa believes either Miyamoto or Matake.

Ogawa recalls no meat served.
