Statements Concerning Ishiyama

Statement of Manabe (Oki) Manabe heard from Miki that Ishiyama used a special instrument for bone cutting at the time of the first operation, which Manabe did not attend.

At 2nd series of operations, when Manabe entered the Autopsy classroom, she saw Ishiyama, Tsutsui and a professor from the Autopsy Section who Manabe did not know. Ishiyama directed the doctors from the Surgical Clinic as to where to place the dissecting tables and Manabe placed the gauze in position and prepared the wash basin so that the doctors could wash their hands.

After the somtach resection by Komori, the doctors went to the other operating table, where Ishiyama was performing a brain operation. Manabe watched. The doctors spoke to Ishiyama during the operation, but it was in German, which Manabe doesn't understand.

About 20 minutes after the stomach resection was completed, Ishiyama completed the brain operation. Ishiyama was performing the operation, with Miki serving as his nurse. Manabe believes his assistants were Torisu and Morimoto. Manabe believes that Nogawa was recording the pulse. Manabe could not see very much from her position. Ishiyama was standing at the head of the Prisoner; on his left was Torisu. To his right was the instrument table, then Miki. By the right of Miki, by the right shoulder of the Prisoner, who, Manabe thinks, was on his back, stood Morimoto. Nogawa, recording the pulse, stood to the right of Morimoto by the Prisoner's chest.

Before the 3rd series, Manabe thinks that there was a meeting of the Fukuoka Surgical Assembly. Within a week after the assembly, Ishiyama told Manabe to sterilize a lot of thread because there would be many operations that day. Manabe asked if they were going to perform "That kid of operation again," meaning PW operations, and Ishiyama understood, answered yes.

During the time Miki, Yayama and Manabe prepared and took the equipment to the Autopsy Section, Ishiyama, Torisu, Hirao, Morimoto, Nogawa and head hurses Tsutsui and Suyama went to the Autopsy Section classroom where the operations were to be held. Ishiyama stood near the entrance to the room, with a professor from the autopsy section and asked him several times whether the Prisoners had not arrived yet.

Before the Prisoners were taken into the room where the operations were to be held, Manabe left the Autospy Section and went back to the Surgical Clinic for an extra length of cord for the operating lamp.

When Manabe returned she cleaned up the wash basin and picked up some gauze that had fallen to the floor. At this time one operation was in progress. Ishiyama and Komori were performing this operation on a PW on a dissecting table in about the middle of the room and a little to the South.

After the stomach operation was completed, Manabe heard from one of the teachers that Ishiyama had performed a heart operation and had experimented to see whether a person would live if a cut in his heart was sutured immediately.

Statement of Yayama (30 July 1947) In late May or early June, Tsutsui told Yayama, to report to the Autopsy Room and bring the cart that had all the operating instruments on it. Tsutsui was already at the Autopsy Room when they arrived along with Suyama, Ishiyama, Hirao, Torisu, Miki, Manabe, and Yayama took the instruments from the cart and. prepared for operating.

Persons present during these 3 operations this date: Torisu, Komori, Suyama, Manabe, Tsutsui, Hirao, Miki, Ishiyama, Senba, Yayama.

The first PW was operated on in the abdomen; his stomach was removed. Ishiyama, operated on the first PW; Komori stood to his right and assisted.

First, Komori and torisu painted the stomach of the PW with iodine and cleaned it with alcohol. Yayama doesn't recall anyone shaving the hair off the abdomen, 4 which is customary. Ishiyama then made the incision about 12 centimeters from the bottom of the sternum to the umbilicus. The incision was made vertically. Komori and Torisu began stopping the bleeding by applying hemostats to the blood vessels. They also heldlthe incision opened so that Ishiyama could operate. Ishiyama cut the entire stomach and placed it in a metal container, then sutured the intestine to the trachea, (Ed note-does this actually refer to esophagus?) then went to another operation.

Ishiyama - operated on one Prisoner, possible two. He cut out the entire stomach, placed it in a metal container, left the operation before suturing the incision on the first Pw.

Ishiyama's taking the stomach and putting it in a glass container was unusual since Yayama had never seen a whole stomach removed before and because a persone without a stomach cannot live very long.

Yayama saw no other doctor cut out organs. When Ishiyama left the first Prisoner, walked to the dissecting table of the 3rd Prisoner, Yayama was collecting instruments, prepared the gauze and sutures for the 2nd Prisoner.

Yayama doesn't recall Ishiyama saying anything except fo ask for instruments—if he had said anything to the other doctors, it would have been in German and Yayama would not have understood it.

Ishiyama , Mori, and Morimoto were all present at the operation on the 3rd Prisoner. At that time Yayama was assisting Komori and Hirao at the 2nd operation.

Yayama doesn't remember an operating lamp used during these operations, altho Ishiyama always used one when he performed operations at the first Surgery Clinic

After operations, Miki, Manabe and Yayama returned to the 1st Surgery Clinic. Remaining in the Autopsy Room at that time: Ishiyama, Komori, Hirao, Senba, Mori, Morimoto, Suyama.
