Statement of Tomoda (420, 16 May 47) Ishiyama was doctor of 1st Surgery Clinic, separate from Tomoda's 2nd, its experiments independent and different, no association or exchange of ideas— only learn of each other through meetings of Medical Congress. In May 1945 Medical Congress meeting at Fukuoka, Tomoda reported on research with Alginic Acid, Ishiyama stated since AA hard to get, not practical, that he experimented with sea water, which was more practical, since plentiful. This 27-28 May. Ishiyama lectured only on water pressure on intestines. Dr. Lin close associate of Tomoda, experimented on dogs, overheard Ishiyama and Tomoda discussion in May, resented attitude of Ishiyama. Rumor: someone of 1st surgery clinic operated on some PWs, sometimes Ishiyama’s name was mentioned. Ishiyama 10 years older than Tomoda, not a good friend. Hirako in Anatomy Department with Masao Ishizawa, not under Ishiyama, who could not issue him orders. Morimoto - name in paper along with Ishiyama as to Operation of PWs at Univeristy. Worked in Ishiyama's clinic. Ishiyama was merely present at first meeting of Conference for Ministry of Education, in October 1944, not at 2nd. Jinnaka, Ishiyama, Nakajima and Misao were active in advisory capacity to the military, with following specialities. Ishiyama - general supervision of surgery over army doctors in Western Army etc. |

Statement of Torisu (420, 26 Apr. 47) Fact that Ishiyama and Komori dead disadvantageous to Torisu. Would be different if Ishiyama had listened to Torisu and cancelled operation. Torisu obliged to help; but did not take part in later operations which endangered patients lives. |

Statement of Tsuchiya (420, 16 May 47) Tsuchiya has heard of Prisoners used for experimental purposes, heard that dead bodies were lying in anatomy room, hear that others helped Ishiyama, that Ishiyama made announcement that he had used American Prisoners for experimental purposes, this supposedly to all Surgical doctors at Surgical Congress. Ishiyama -2- Statement of Tsuchiya (420, 16 May 47) Cont’d. Tsuchiya there, heard Ishiyama speak, but heard nothing of this. Ishiyama spoke on bombing shock, that so many cases that sea water injected for every cure. Ishiyama did not get along with "other” sections. ’’Men with lower scientific level”— believes they were obstetricians of Medical School - wanted I and other professors to resign because, in case of Ishiyama, they knew of his experiment." Tsuchiya heard that professor of anatomy assisted Ishiyama in Prisoner experiments. Ishiyama first heard of AA at Surgical Congress. Ishiyama did say that he had used sea water as a blood substitute, that rough sea water would be very dangerous, but OK if filtered so as to remove bacteria first. Tsuchiya then corrects statement; Ishiyama did not speak at Surgical Congress on bombing shocks, but showed a picture and demonstrated how he treated patients for illness that Tsuchiya doesn*t recall— was not on artifical blood. ?????? Statement of Ohno (420, 9 June 47) Among those conducting such approved (for draft deferment, approved by Ministry of Education) experiments were: Ohno - tropical diseases I"c"hiyama - brain abscess and epilepsy resulting from external injuries etc. Ohno considers Ishiyama a very conscientious research man, one of foremost of Japanese surgeons, very interested in his pupils, a good teacher, very valuable to the University. Ohno knew him about 5 years while he had charge of Surgical Clinic #1. He was a graduate, then a sub-professor of KIU, became a medical professor in Taiwan, came back to KIU in 1940. Ohno heard fumors at the University that Ishiyama had operated on some American flyers, that'patients died,; Ohno asked if these rumors were true. Ishiyama replied: ”1 have operated on the brain of an American prisoner(s) who was (were) in a somewhat of a mad and disquieted state. These operations were performed with the knowledge that for many years I have performed brain operations on Epileptic patients with success and that as a doctor I believed that it was nothing to dis-honor my conscience. The reason why I did not perform the operation in an ordinary operating room was that it was the idea of the army that they did not want it to be revealed to the outside and known by the general public. Since for this reason I have only performed my duties as a doctor. I believe that this would not cause the University any inconvenience. I do not want you to worry about the rumors. The army did not state their names, age or anything else but simply stated their present state of illness and that they were suited for operation and all I did was operate.” Ohno then asked him if he couldn't find the names and Ishiyama answered that it was impossible to find out anything since Komori died. Ishiyama didn't say how many Prisoners there were. Ohno doesn't believe anyone in Western Army Headquarters could influence or order Ishiyama to perform such operations. |
This book documents the legal proceedings of the December 1949 Khabarovsk trial in which twelve members of the Japanese Army's covert biological warfare Unit 731 were prosecuted for their war crimes. The trial sought to hold key leaders in Japan's bio-weapons program accountable for atrocities after WWII.
