Statement of Noda (IS July - 4 August 1947) In latter part of May, Noda saw Torisu, Makino and Goshima watching Ishiyama operating on a Prisoner’s heart, he, Ishiyama, removed pieces from the heart. Later that day Makino ordered Noda to sweep the autopsy room floor. Present were Makino, Goshima, Tanaka, Komori, Torisu and Hirao on his return. The 2 Prisoners were lying on the dissecting table dead. Tanaka and Makino were working on one prisoner. Goshima was working around the chest of another Prisoner. There was a retracted incision on the Prisoner's chest. Hirao and Torisu were there with Goshima. Goshima reached into the incision and cut out something that looked like a hose about 3" long, 1" in diameter. The doctors placed the organs removed in glass containers, took them to their rooms, Goshima took part of a large artery from the region of the heart. |

Statement of Hirako (26 Aug - 4 Sept 47) Goshima was a student for special study, in Anatomy Section. Hirako thinks he told Goshima once that it might be good to get specimens during the time the operations were being performed, for his own studies. As to giving permission to anyone to remove the brain of a Prisoner, Hirako said, "If you can get it, get it from the operator.”, probably to Goshima because he was still studying, and this would cut down his expenses. Goshima probably did not get a brain; otherwise he would have shown it to Hirako. Hirako does recall having a conversation as to preserving a PW body with either Tanaka, Makino or Goshima during the time that PWs were being operated on. Hirako told Tanaka, Makino, Goshima and Ryu they could get specimens because Hirako knew they were working for degrees and could use them. However, he told them to get the specimens from the operator, not to take them from the bodies. Those men did not report to Hirako that they had got specimens. |

Statement of Tanaka (3-15 July 1947) In late April 1945 Tanaka saw one Prisoner in the autopsy training room, left for awhile, returned to see a lung operation performed. Goshima and Ryu were there. Goshima took some parts from the wrist of the Prisoner, (after operation was finished), and he and Ryu were going to remove the brain. Goshima and Ryu were the only 2 left in the operating room when Tanaka left. Later, in early June 1945, Tanaka was again informed of operations on PWs, went to the anatomy room by himself, saw 2 Prisoners, one already dead, and Makino and Goshima were taking specimens from the body. After Tanaka had gotten some specimens, he left. Makino and Goshima were still there. |
